The Council welcomes two new members to its Board who were unanimously approved at the organization’s January 17th Board meeting. They are Bob Moss and Steve Wasserman. Bob Moss is the Chairman & former CEO of the Mahler Company, Inc. He co-founded the New York Volunteer for Youth Campaign and was a mentor to a 7th grade class in the New York City school system. Steve Wasserman is a Real Estate Broker with Colliers Abood Wood-Fay in Fort Lauderdale. He is a PASS partner with Boyd Anderson High School in Fort Lauderdale and a Leadership Florida Alumni.
The Council also welcomes Dr. Pat Dixon to the organization. Dr. Dixon is a former Broward County Public Schools outstanding Principal, Region Director and the winner of the Council’s 2004 Leonard Miller Principal of the Year Award. While she was Principal of Dillard Elementary in Broward, she moved the school’s achievement from a D to an A, and remarkably sustained the A grade for two more years. Dr. Dixon will work with special PASS schools, including Holmes Elementary in Miami-Dade and Boyd Anderson High in Broward, as well as the Council’s statewide Leadership Forums and Academies.
This Spring, the Council will conduct 3-4 Assistant Principal Leadership Forums, sponsored by the Florida Department of Education’s William Cecil Golden Professional Development Program for School Leaders. More information follows.
Some PASS news: The PASS annual meeting will be held in Tampa in mid May. It is generously hosted by Raymond James Financial and Scott Curtis, a company Senior Vice President and Council Board member... Welcome to Bernadette Craig, Sr. V.P. Operations, Bank of America who is the new business mentor for the Maximo Elementary PASS model... Carter G. Woodson Elementary, a PASS school with business mentors Muffet Course, Helen Lane and Joannie Newton, recently received recognition from the Duval County School Board. The Jacksonville school was honored for reaching the goals of the Florida Just
Read Program and making tremendous gains in the percentage of students reading on grade level, and also reducing the percentage of students at high risk for not achieving grade level Reading goals. Principal Steve Dimattia praised the positive influence of the PASS partnership. PASS coordinator Sherry Clarke attended the recognition.
More than 70 business and community leaders, including PASS and Executive PASS CEO’s, Principals and coaches got an up close and in depth look at how to use data to improve student achievement, linking information to instruction. The "Anatomy of School Improvement" meeting was held at North Miami Middle, an Executive PASS school. Council Board member and Vice President of WSVN Channel 7, Andy Ansin, is the Executive PASS business mentor working with Principal Arnold Montgomery. The Channel 7 news team also volunteers at the school, implementing a Reading program.
In order to better serve school-based educators and improve its professional leadership development and activities, the Council is sending a survey to past and current program participants. The link to the online
survey will be sent to more than 600 Council program participants and 10,000 SP Snapshot (student performance data tool) users. The survey takes under a minute to complete and is confidential. The Council appreciates the cooperation of its program participants in this effort.
Council Board member and PASS CEO Bob Graham and Council President and Executive Director, Dr. Elaine Liftin were special guests and presenters at the West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III and First Lady Gayle Manchin’s Conference on Business Leadearship in Education on January 4th. The state is exploring replicating PASS. Dr. Liftin was the keynote speaker. She will also be a special presenter at the Hope Foundation’s National Institute—Failure is Not an Option. Dr. Liftin will be presenting a session on Building
Sustainable Leadership. Some 650 participants are expected to attend.

Assistant Principal Leadership Forums
sponsored by the
William Cecil Golden Professional Development Program for School Leaders
conducted by the Council for Educational Change.
Scholarships are offered to every district through the Superintendent which cover the two day development event and meals, but do not include travel or accommodation should the participant opt to stay overnight.
The Forums are designed to develop the instructional leadership skills and fast track the professional development of Assistant Principals. The format is interactive and includes national experts, and sessions in strategic instruction areas such as Science.
OUTCOMES
Assistant principals will return ready and able to use new skills and implement new strategies. They will be:
developing a personalized leadership plan
exploring personal leadership skills and strategies
working hands on with mentors, experts and peers
developing success strategies for Mathematics and Science
networking with peers
returning with new online tools, resources
