The Council For Educational Change Sixth Annual
$10,000 Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award

Mr. Leonard Miller

COUNCIL HISTORY:

The Council for Educational Change, Florida’s Educational Think Tank, is the successor organization to the South Florida Annenberg Challenge initiative. Combined Council and Challenge work has served nearly one million students in Florida since 1997. Council work is research based. It has produced compelling, statistically verified results, that the single most important factor that can improve a public school’s performance is a strong, empowered principal .

Principal Leadership is the key to achieving high quality education.

We learned this through:

  • evaluation of the South Florida Annenberg Challenge initiative
  • Florida School Report’s Best Practices study
Council for Educational Change’s ongoing research and programs. .

Superior school leadership should be recognized and rewarded. That is why the Council Board established the:

$10,000 Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award

This Award is an annual recognition, in its sixth year. It shines a spotlight on extraordinary Principal Leadership and its importance. The winning Principal receives $10,000 for his/her personal use. All finalists receive a monetary award.

ORIGIN OF AWARD

Leonard Miller was the Chair of the South Florida Annenberg Challenge from 1997 up until the time of his death in 2002. He was also the founder of the Challenge’s successor organization, the Council for Educational Change.

Mr. Miller firmly believed that Principal Leadership was the key to unlocking school improvement potential. His leadership and vision inspired the Council’s mission and leadership work including : PASS, the Florida Leadership Academy, the Accelerated School Administrator Program (ASAP), the Professional Development Initiative, and the Principal Portal.

We could never hope to adequately immortalize the legendary work undertaken by Mr. Miller to improve education. This is just one small tribute to his ongoing legacy. It captures and continues his unwavering conviction that:

“If Every Child Can Get a Quality Education, Every Child Can Succeed.”

Applications for the 2008 Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award will be available shortly.
